I’VE HIT THE ROAD, if only in a cyber way. I’m teaching this week online at She Writes, a fine site where women get together and talk about writing. My topic? Memoir, of course. I’m the guest editor this week. It’s a real honor, and in honor of that honor I’m debuting what I call my Memoir Manifesto. But that’s not all.
I’ve had some extraordinary guests writing with me on She Writes. On day one, it was the exceptional Katrina Kenison, author of The Gift of An Ordinary Day, with a fine post about writing. Today, I am deeply honored to be featuring an excerpt from the upcoming memoir, The Letter: My Journey Through Love, Loss, and Life, by Marie Tillman. Marie is the widow of Pat Tillman, who proudly put his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals on hold to serve his country, and was killed in Afghanistan. Tomorrow, it’s big sister, Margaret Roach, with an excerpt from her gorgeous And I Shall Have Some Peace There. After that? Well, come see.

I’m on a ‘Marion high” because I can’t stay away from your posts. I’m reading everything I can find on you/by you and enjoying your class on She Writes. Years ago, can’t remember when, I bought my mother The Roots of Desire. I don’t know if she read it; she may have been taken aback by the subtitle: … sexual power of red hair. :) She grew up in a backwoods little town in Arkansas, extremely poor, the oldest of 10 kids. She always told me she was an ugly redhead with horrible freckles. I think she exaggerated.
I wonder if you and Margaret have traced your ancestry. I’m a Roach too. Well, I know you know where this is going. :-) Would love to claim you two as a limb, a twig or a leaf.
I’m looking forward to getting my hands on The Memoir Project and Margaret’s books too. You both sound so fascinating … and satisfied. Thanks you for sharing. I’ve learned so much already.
